Legal Observers NSW is among 39 legal and community organisations to sign an open letter opposing the anti-protest laws rushed through the Legislative Assembly Wednesday night and due to be considered in the Legislative Council today. The laws make disrupting or obstructing a pedestrian or traffic punishable by 2 years imprisonment and a $22k fine. The open letter can be found here.
Maritime Union of Australia, National Tertiary Educators’ Union and Unions NSW have all expressed their opposition to the laws.
Other human rights groups that have come out against the laws include the NSW Council of Civil Liberties, Environmental Defenders’ Office, and Australian Lawyers for Human Rights.
